I was recently working with a customer who had just deployed a number of Polycom CX600′s as Lync 2010 Common Area Phones across several branch offices in conference rooms and lobbies. The initial deployment went smoothly and the Common Area Phones were working as expected.
The next Monday morning, I received a call from the customer saying that all of the Common Area Phones were offline, showing the message “Signing in… Cannot sign in. There may be a problem with the server or with your network connection. Please check your network connection. Retrying.”

Microsoft has released several new tools for Lync users. I think I’m most excited about the Tabbed Conversations tool!

A new update for Lync 2010 desktop clients is now available, bringing us to version number 7577.280. From KB2551268, the update adds the following fixes:
- 2551849 Lync 2010 still polls for the conversation history of a non-listed contact
- 2551847 Lync 2010 still polls for the voice mail of a non-listed contact
- 2551846 An update is available that adds npMeetingJoinPluginOC.dll and MeetingJoinAxOC.dll files to Lync 2010
- 2551848 The Office Communicator Object Model API requires calling additional subscription to stop polling subscriptions in a Lync 2010 environment

Microsoft has released a second April 2011 CU2 update patch which replaces the previous version 7577.256. The latest April 2011 patch for Lync 2010 is version 7577.275.
It appears this latest patch adds an additional fix for Lync Online.

I ran into an unexpected issue during a migration from OCS 2007 R2 to Lync 2010 and felt it deserved documenting. In the environment, OCS and Lync had been in coexistence for some time, and the decision was made to migrate the voice path from OCS Mediation servers to Lync Mediation servers collocated on the Lync Front End and a Lync SBA. After assigning new Lync Dial Plans and Voice Policies to the users, I started receiving complaints about failed calls from remote users connected through the OCS Edge Server. Certain calls were failing only when connected through the Edge with the error message “Unable to place call. Please check the number and try again“. After a little trial and error it became clear that calls made to E.164 normalized numbers worked fine but calls to non-E.164 normalized numbers were failing consistently.
